NEED HELP? WE GOT YOU COVERED!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you have openings for new PRP patients?

Yes! We are currently scheduling on Thursdays only.

BUT, we don't take everyone. Dr. Hauser and his staff decide on a case-by-case basis for each patient, to make sure we're the right fit (please keep reading the FAQ's). When you're ready to find out, fill out the Contact Form or call the office and speak with Jill, the Office Manager.

What type of medical conditions can PRP help me with?

Our PRP focuses on:

Shoulder: Rotator cuff tendinitis or tear, rotator cuff impingement syndrome or bursitis, bicipital tendinitis, labrum tear, arthritis, instability

Elbow/wrist/hand: Tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis, trigger finger, arthritis, other wrist and finger tendinitis, Carpal tunnel

Knee: Patellar tendinitis, partially torn or strained major ligaments of knee (ACL/LCL/MCL), meniscus tears, chondromalacia, arthritis, instability

Ankle: Achilles tendinitis, peroneal tendinitis, ankle sprain, instability, other foot or ankle tendinitis

Other: Muscle strains, trigger points, Chronic pain due to arthritis or injury

We do NOT treat: Nerves, Nerve roots, spinal discs

UPCOMING Therapies: In the near future, we hope to offer aesthetics such as vampire facials and hair restoration. If you're interested in these, please let Jill know and we will put you on our wait list.

Do you accept insurance?

We do accept HSA (Health Savings Accounts), Flexible Spending Accounts, and credit card payments.

Unfortunately,  PRP isn’t covered by insurance or Medicare/Medicaid and is considered an out of pocket expense.

Most insurance carriers deem PRP as investigational and therefore won't pay. Many patients find the out of pocket cost well worth the investment in trying to reduce pain and disability

What is included in the initial consultation and what is the cost?

Your first appointment includes an initial consultation with Dr. Hauser and review of your prior Radiology imaging studies (Dr. Hauser is also a Board certified Radiologist).

If no contraindications, PRP will be performed immediately after the consultation.

Prices vary depending on the number of injections and the number of sites.

Discounts are offered if more than 1 body part requires treatment at the same time. Please call Jill for further information.

What are your office hours?

Monday through Thursday 9:00 am- 4:00 pm.

Please note that PRP is currently only offered on Thursdays

How do I schedule an appointment?

Is this the same as a cortisone injection?

No. Cortisone injections are a synthetic corticosteroids that are injected into the joints or areas of soft tissue to reduce pain and inflammation.

While cortisone injections in limited amounts can be helpful, they do not alter the underlying cause (disease process) and therefore often have to be repeated. There are many documented risks of cortisone injections.

PRP involves using the patient’s own blood which contains natural growth factors that promote regeneration of tissue and decreased inflammation. PRP is aimed at being a healing treatment, whereas cortisone is not. Additionally, PRP does not carry the same side effects as cortisone.

How do I know if I am a candidate for PRP?

A consultation is required before any treatment can take place. The consultation includes a comprehensive review of your complaints and medical history, and an examination will be conducted.

Diagnostic studies will be reviewed at the time of the consultation to determine the cause of your complaint. Once a diagnosis is established, Dr. Hauser will discuss treatment options with you, including if you are a candidate for PRP.

How many injections will I need?

This is no universal answer to this question. Typically 1 to 3 injections. Much of this depends on the chronicity and location of your problem. Some patients can successfully be treated with one injection while others require multiple injections over a time period to eliminate or reduce pain to an acceptable level.

How do I know if PRP has helped me?

The answer to this is simple. PRP does not “mask” your pain and other symptoms, like pain medication. If PRP has helped you, you will notice a difference in your overall pain level and function. Rarely patients may see an increase in overall pain levels initially, but as the healing process occurs, symptoms are expected to resolve gradually over the course of 4 to 6 weeks on average. Much depends on the patient’s overall level of health, age, diet, and activity levels. For some patients, repeat treatments may be needed.

What are the possible side effects?

As with any type of injection, there is a small risk of infection, injury to blood vessels and risk of bleeding. There is a small risk of injury to a tendon or ligament when injected. While not truly considered a side effect, some patients may experience increased pain or discomfort for a temporary period following treatment. If you have been ill or running a fever, it is advisable to discuss this with the physician before considering this type of treatment.

How do I determine if I’m a good candidate?

Here are some general guidelines:

  1. Pain duration of 3-6 months or longer
  2. Persistent pain despite physical therapy, activity modification, NSAIDs
  3. Wishes to pursue alternative to surgical treatment

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, credit cards, health savings credit cards and flex spending credit cards. We do not accept personal checks.

Need a payment plan? We offer Care Credit! It’s a health credit card that gives you 6 to 12 months to pay off with no interest.

Is there any paperwork I will need to complete prior to my appointment?

Yes, please! After making an appointment with Hauser Health, we will email a link to the new client paperwork with easy-to-understand instructions. Let us know if you have any problems filling out the forms.

What should I have at my appointment?

Your New Patient Paperwork will already be filled out!

To make for the most efficient use of your time with the doctor, it is a good idea to be prepared with a list of questions and issues you wish to discuss. Also, if you have previous lab results (within the last 3 months) and reports from previous physicians, which you feel are pertinent, please bring copies of these with you to your initial visit.

If you are taking supplements or prescription medicines, these should be documented when you are filling out your New Patient Paperwork- no need to bring them to your appointment!

Where are you located?

We are at 10 West Main St, Middletown, MD. 21769

Does my blood have to be sent away to be processed?

The sample is taken, and treatment given, all during the same appointment at Hauser Health.

The PRP treatment is prepared in-house by Dr. Hauser while you are waiting using state-of-the-art equipment in the office!

Do you need to take a lot of blood?

Surprisingly little. The doctor will normally draw 10 to 20 milliliters of your blood, using a standard procedure (just like drawing blood at the lab).

Does the blood sample hurt? What about the PRP injection?

For the blood draw, it’s generally very quick and fairly comfortable, as our doctor has many years experience in taking blood samples. If desired, we can use a numbing cream or spray.

While everyone’s pain tolerances vary, patients at Hauser health typically report very mild discomfort with PRP injections. A needle is used to draw blood from a vein in the arm initially and then a small needle is used to perform the actual injection(s).

How is Platelet Rich Plasma prepared?

A small sample of blood is taken from the patient. It has to be their own blood. This means that not only is there no risk of transmissible infectious agents, but also no risk of rejection.

The blood sample is then prepared using a centrifuge and a special tube, which spins the blood at high speeds, separating the platelets from the other blood components to create a preparation which is very highly concentrated with healing platelets.

How long does PRP take to perform?

Depending on the number of areas being treated, most procedures will be completed in 30 – 45 minutes.

How long does the effect from PRP last?

This is different for everyone. Much depends on the underlying disease process and whether there have been a recurrent injury to the affected area. It is impossible to predict if and when further treatments will be needed for a specific condition. In some cases, patients do come back months or years later for repeat PRP injections.

What is the success rate of PRP?

The success rate of PRP therapy varies considerably. Much depends on the condition being treated, health status of the patient, age, and degree of underlying degeneration.

Success rates reported in the literature have been largely anecdotal. PRP success in the treatment of tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) has been reported at up to 80-90% in some studies, Achilles tendonitis 70-80% and golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) 60-70%.

Are there any exclusion criteria that inhibit someone from getting PRP?

Severe anemia, low platelet count, abnormal platelet function, active systemic infection or active cancers are all contra-indications.
